What we do

New Roofs and Re-roofing A new roof means stripping the old covering back to the rafters, checking and replacing anything that has gone soft, then rebuilding with new breathable membrane, treated battens and a fresh covering in slate or tile. Roof Repairs Most leaks are not the roof failing, they are one part of it failing: a slipped slate, a cracked mortar joint, or flashing that has lifted away from a chimney. Flat Roofing A flat roof fails at its edges and its joints long before the middle gives up, which is why patching one rarely holds. Roof Inspections and Maintenance An inspection is us going up, photographing everything, and telling you plainly what needs doing now, what can wait a few years and what does not need touching at all. Tiled Roofing Most houses around here are tiled: clay if they went up between the wars, usually concrete if they went up after. Slate Roofing Natural slate is the covering we most enjoy working with and the one that most rewards doing properly. Guttering Guttering is the cheapest part of a roof and the part that causes the most expensive damage when it is ignored. Soffits and Fascias The fascia carries your guttering and the soffit closes the gap underneath it. Roof Drainage and Leadwork Almost every leak that is not a slipped tile is a leadwork leak. Repointing and Restoration Repointing is raking out the failed mortar between bricks or stones and replacing it with fresh mortar mixed to suit the building. Structural Masonry Repair Stonework is the half of our name that most roofers do not offer. Lime Work Older solid wall buildings were built to let water in and let it back out again, and lime mortar is the part that lets them do it. Damp Proofing Most damp is not rising damp. Boundary and Garden Walls A garden wall gets weather on both faces and on the top, which is why it deteriorates faster than the house it belongs to.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. Quotes are free and there is no obligation to go ahead.

How quickly can you come out?

It depends what else we have on that week. Call or message and you will get an honest answer about when we can get to you, rather than a date we cannot keep.

Do you work on older and period properties?

Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. Older solid wall buildings usually need lime rather than cement, and stone needs handling differently to brick. Our lime work and stonework pages go into how we approach both.

Will I need scaffolding?

Anything above single storey, or any job lasting more than a short visit, normally does. It is safer and the finish is better. Scaffolding is priced into the quote so there is no surprise part way through.

Do you take the old material away?

Yes. Stripping out and disposal is part of the job rather than an extra line at the end.
