Greenford and Perivale filled in along the Western Avenue in the twenties and thirties, and Northolt largely followed after the war, so you get a clean split between clay-tiled inter-war semis and concrete-tiled post-war housing within a mile of each other. The inter-war roofs are at the point where the ridge and hip mortar has failed and tiles have started slipping in runs rather than one at a time. The post-war concrete tiles behave differently: they rarely slip but they go porous, hold moss and get heavy, and on a shallow-pitched roof that combination causes damp long before anything falls off. Nearly every property in both groups has an extension or garage with a felt flat roof waiting to be stripped and re-covered.
