Uxbridge is three miles from our base and mostly 1930s semi-detached housing under clay and concrete tile, with older property around the town centre. Ridge and hip repointing, slipped tiles and flat-roofed extensions are the everyday work.
Uxbridge is close enough that we are there constantly. Most of it went up between the wars as Metroland expanded along the Piccadilly and Metropolitan lines, so you get street after street of hipped-roof semis in clay tile, and those roofs are all reaching the same age at the same time. The mortar bedding under the ridges and hips is the usual failure, followed by tile nibs snapping and slates or tiles slipping in a run. Around the old town centre and Cowley there is Victorian property with slate and taller stacks. Almost every one of those semis has had a rear extension or a garage added with a felt flat roof, and re-covering those in EPDM is a regular job here.
